So, after a lot of anticipation Urge Gastropub and Whiskey Bank has opened at 2002 South Coast Hwy. Oceanside, CA (corner of Vista Way and Coast highway). This is Urge’s second location but the fact that they brew beer and have a large whiskey “bank” sets them apart from the sister restaurant.
Urge Gastropub and Whiskey Bank (for the remainder of the article I’m just calling it Urge)
The space. If Edison only knew his namesake bulbs were going to be used in every gastropub in California he would be proud.
Lots of Whiskey, over 250 types. They have a good beer list and Mason Aleworks their in house brewing has about 6 offerings. I would of liked to see more sours and barrel aged beers.
Urge serves classic gastropub fare (classic American with a twist) to be honest I was not overly excited about Urge but went with some out of town friends opening night, had some drinks and two apps and decided to come back.
This is the dish I had opening night and I really liked it. I really like thier Chipotle Aioli it has a nice back heat to it and is used as a dipping sauce for a few of their apps. and on a few burgers.
DAKOTA CHISLIC / 14
MEDIUM RARE MARINATED BEEF TENDERLOIN – – SCULPIN MUSTARD – URBOCK AIOLI
CHIPOTLE AIOLI – PICKLED RED ONION
Opening night madness, standing room only packed to capacity (if you were there opening night and are one of the idiots who said “it took forever to get our drinks” or “service was slow” on Yelp…dowse yourself in Napalm and light a match…no gasoline I do not want the chance of it blowing out.)
Going back for lunch I wanted to try something other than a burger.
FRIED CHEESE CURDS / 9
CHIPOTLE TEMPURA BATTER – WHITE CHEDDAR CURDS – CHIPOTLE AIOLI
If you have not had cheese curds before, they were a favorite of Miss Muffet and are great in curds and whey. Think non greasy mozzarella stick bites. There is that Aioli I love so much:)
PERUVIAN SPICED STUFFED CHICKEN / 19
ROASTED GARLIC CLOVES – BLEU CHEESE – SPINACH
SWEET POTATO PUREE – WHITE WINE MUSTARD VERMOUTH SAUCE
I liked this, only thing between the vermouth sauce and the sweet potato the dish was kind of sweet. Chicken was on point though and very good.
Overall, both trips to urge have been good. they are brand new so Inconsistencies are to be expected. Jason ,who sometimes writes articles here, went and while he loved the Lamb Meatballs he felt his Bison burger was dry.
OK, so my early take on Urge. I liked it I would bring a friend there. Lunch is calm if you want more of a scene go on a weekend night.
