Living Tea’s Monthly Pancake Breakfast ~ Oceanside

This Sunday was Living Tea’s monthly pancake breakfast. If you are not familiar with Living Tea Brewery, they are a kombucha Brewery and tap-room located in Oceanside at 302 Wisconsin Ave. If you have had Kombucha at a local bar or restaurant there is a good chance it was one of theirs.

The Breakfast starts.

Each 3rd Sunday of the month they throw a Pancake breakfast from 10 am till noon. The breakfast is donation base allowing you to pay what you can or thinks fair. All proceeds go to local charities. They do these events as a thank you to their supporters and to help strengthen the sence of community in the area.

I have been wanting to attend one and was able to on the 19th.

Puppies! The event is kid and dog friendly.

I arrived right at 10 so I could say hi. There were probably 10 people when it started and around 25ish when I left about 10:45 but its a fluid event where people come and go throughout the 2 hours.

In addition to the pancakes they also serve coffee and kombucha during the breakfast. The coffee is included with your donation or lack there of if you can not afford it. Not sure about the kombucha I did not get any. Though I have had it many times and have included it in some of my Chef dinner events.

The Pancake Master. I should have asked his name but Pancake Master is a pretty good nickname.

toppings (1 of 1)

Accoutrements for the pancakes ~ Bananas, apples, and oranges.

I went with apples and bananas.

Pancakes (1 of 1)

See told you I went with apples and bananas. Spiralina, gluten-free, organic pancakes with said bananas and apples plus chia hearts.

The pancakes were light, moist, and fluffy with a slightly crisp exterior. The batter was made with coconut oil which gave them their moisture. The fruit and the chia hearts were a great accompaniment.

open mike (1 of 1)

They also host open mic for musicians and singers to play during the breakfast. I did not catch this performers name but she was good. The boys from Living Tea / Barnwell Shift (that is their band) jumped in to accompany her.

I really like the thought behind these breakfasts and the food ain’t bad either:) I would highly recommend checking one out.

Elena’s french Crepes Cafe ~ Food Report ~ Oceanside

So, the other day I posted about Elena’s French Crepe Cafe opening. You can read that post here. Today I went back and tried the crepes for myself.

I ordered a savory turkey and cheese crepe with pickles and pickled onions on the side.

Turkey and Cheese Crepe.

The crepe was perfect, everything you want out of a crepe, light and pillowy. The filling is up to personal choice as to what you like. They are quite large and perfect for breakfast or a light lunch. I brought a Strawberry and sour cream crepe back to my friends Mario and Ton Ton at Banana Dang! and they concurred. They loved their crepe.

So, if you want something different for breakfast or lunch I highly recommend them.

Elena’s French Crepes Cafe ~ Oceanside

Elena’s French Crepes Cafe recently opened in downtown Oceanside at 511 Pier View Way. They are located right next to Breakfast Club Diner in the space that used to house a small gift shop.

crepes-ext-1-of-1

I am so glad that they chose Oceanside. They fill a void that existed for alternative breakfast and lunch choices. Though Petite Madeline does offer a mighty fine crepe on their menu, the choice is limited to one or two varieties depending on the weekly specials.

The Cafe is run by Elena and her husband, who are just the nicest people you could meet. They had always wanted to open a cafe upon retiring and when the time came they chose to do it.

The cafe is simple and bright inside, they did a great job on a fast turn around on the old space.

menu-1-of-1

The menu is straight forward, their philosophy is, do one thing, do it well and do it with passion.

They feature 5 savory crepes and 11 sweet varieties. They feature Peet’s coffee and teas.

This post is just to get the word out, I will return Thursday Morning to have a couple crepes. I have been doing this long enough that I have no doubt they will be great. Give them some love. Let me know what you think if you beat me there.

Dining Out San Diego Passport

So, if you follow me you know, I do not sell things on this website. This is a bit different, Dining Out San Diego has partnered up with me to offer their Dining Passport at a special rate through my site.

sd1passbook_cover-600x600

If you’re not familiar with Dining out San Diego it is a great magazine featuring Chefs and Restaurants across San Diego. Also, unlike other publications, they have supported North County Chefs and Restaurants.

The Passport allows you to receive 2 for one entrees at 50 San Diego Restaurants that normally do not do deals.

Some of the North County restaurants include 608, The Whet Noodle, Land and Water Company, Harney Sushi, Iron Fist Brewing, Wooden Spoon. There are more great restaurants up and down the coast.

Normally it costs $99 and is good for a year. With our partnership, it is $35 (64% off).

At that cost, it pays for itself in 2 meals.

You keep the passport and every time you use it that page is stamped. It is not a coupon book. These restaurants have a great relationship with the magazine. They want to be in it.

I mean Bracero Cucina De Raiz does not put coupons in the reader.

To order go here ~ Dining Out Passbook  and enter code NCF2016 at checkout.

Here is a complete list of restaurants:

608, Americana, Arterra Del Mar, BICE, Bracero, Bullys, Cafe Gratitude, Cafe Lulu, Caffe Calabria, Cali Comfort BBQ, Catania, City Tacos, Common Theory, Crest Cafe, Cupcakes Squared, Eclipse Chocolate, En Fuego, Enoteca Style, Farmers Bottega, Fig Tree Cafe, Hacienda de Vega, Harney Sushi, Henry’s Pub, Hodads, Holiday Wine Cellar, iDessert, Indigo Grill, Ironfist Brewing, Isabel’s Cantina, Kous Kous, Land & Water Co, Maderas, Mish Mash, Napizza, North Park Market, Pearl Hotel, Petrini’s, Prepkitchen, Puesto, Pushkin, Salad Style, Salt & Cleaver, Sausage & Meat, Solare, Spike Africa, Studio Diner, Talavera Azul, Toscana, Tostadas, Tuscany La Costa, VIVA, Whet Noodle, whisknladle, Wooden Spoon, Wrench & Rodent, Yummy Cupcakes

San Diego Trip Part One ~ A tale of two chickens.

look I need to get back to writing. Two things, I realize that what I do on vacation is what I do for work..sad? until you realize you love what you do.

Enough about me..

I crammed a lot of eating into two days….

Chicken sandwiches. Sounds simple, yet done right…Son Please!

We are gonna start at Biga (this place was lauded by me from Chef Willy from 608) and rightfully so . Simple Italian ingredients don justice.

bigga-chicken-skin-1-of-1

Biga CLT ~ baked crispy mary’s organic chicken skin. scamorza. tomato. pickled onions. basil. wild arugula. lemon aioli.

This on the description would have seemed heavy…it was not. the bread was perfect and fluffy, the sandwich calk full of flavor…on to the salad…

And now on to Crack Shack:)

crack-shack-1-of-1

This makes me so happy on so many levels:)

So, the Crack Shak is Richard Blaze’s fried chicken restaurant (coming soon to Encinitas) and while I could prolificate ..I need to get back to watching Luke Cage on Netflix. Nuff said this place delivered the best chicken sandwich I have had..close second TBG’s Chicken Sandwich.

Coop Deville ~ Fried chicken, pickled Freno chilies, lime mayo, Napa cabbage, Brioche.

I was there at 9am when they opened..perfect service, and I was like “I will eat half” nope devoured it..hands down best-fried chicken sandwich I have had.

The most empty  you will see this place:)

Succulent Cafe ~ Carlsbad (Now Open)

The second iteration of Succulent Cafe has opened at the end of State Street in downtown Carlsbad. Like the original cafe in Oceanside the cafe serves coffees, smoothies, teas, and pastries. Though the menu at the Carlsbad will be expanding in the future.

The real charm and beauty of Succulent cafe is its atmosphere. The owner peter has a talent for creating relaxing friendly environments, where you are surrounded by living art. The best way to show this is through pictures, not words.

They have been open two days now, I will be back there next week and add any additional info.

Senor Grubby’s ~ Carlsbad

So, a few posts back I visited  The Taco Stand in Encinitas. I had written I thought it was a bit better than Grubby’s in Carlsbad. In order to be fair and due to the fact it had been a while since eating at Grubby’s I thought I would re-visit them in order to maintain journalistic integrity. Really,  I was just in Carlsbad and craving tacos:).

Grubby's ext

Grubby's int 1

They have expanded a bit since I was last in adding a patio bar area in the back.

Grubby's kitchen

large, open, and clean kitchen area.

They have expanded their menus as well. Both the drink and food menus sport a lot more options.

I went for a trio of Tacos. Two off their “Gastronomo” taco menu and one off their “Traditional” menu.

Grubby's Tacos 1

(From the top clockwise.) Carnitas ~ Guacamole, onion, and cilantro.  Home Smoked Honey Jalapeno Pork Belly ~ Guacamole, cilantro, and onions.  Duck Chicharrones ~ Avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro, Manchego cheese.

To start off the pork belly taco was insane. The pork had a great smokey flavor and not too much fat. Five content kittens rating…5 cats

The Duck Skin Chicharrones taco was great as well. Crispy flavorful fried duck skin with the perfect amount of toppings.

The Carnitas was a perfect example of what it was supposed to be.

Another thing I like about Grubby’s is their salsa bar. They serve really good homemade salsas in a range of styles and heat levels. I used their Verde salsa ( medium heat) on the two pork tacos and the second hottest red salsa (forgot the name, pretty hot)) on the Chicharrones.

The street tacos at Grubby’s are true to street taco size and price $2.55 to $3. So, I went back for more since my first tacos were great.

Round 2 ( I did circuit training in the morning).

Grubby's Tacos 2

Grilled Fish Taco (L) and Shrimp Diablo Taco (R)

Both tacos came with their appointed proteins plus pico de gallo, cabbage slaw, and a chipotle cream sauce.

The shrimp taco was good but the fish in the fish taco lacked flavor and acid. Neither were in the class of the first round of tacos.

So, after a revisit, I would put Grubby’s in the same league as The Taco Stand, at least on what I experienced. Both places are different though and the made to order fresh tortillas at The Taco Stand do add another element. Yet, the pork belly I had at Grubby’s was killer.

Coin toss.

Taco Stand ~ Encinitas

Taco Stand, which has locations in La Jolla, and Downtown San Diego, is a family run company serving authentic Mexican street-style tacos on fresh made-in-house tortillas.

They started their La Jolla location in 2013 and recently opened their third location in Encinitas at 642 South Coast Highway a few weeks ago.

Taco Stand Encinitas

Taco Stand, Encinitas.

I arrived shortly after opening on a Monday, so I encountered no lines. I had gone by last Friday and the line was 10 to 12 out the door. This is kind of deceptive as the ordering counter is 5′ inside the doorway. Kinda like the new Oceanside swami’s if you are familiar.

Taco Stand Encinitas interior.jpg

Taco Stand Interior.

The menu is pretty simple 8 styles of street tacos from the obligatory Carne Asada to a vegetable nopal taco. About the same number of burritos, 5 styles of breakfast burritos, and a number of quesadillas and sides.

I decided to run the gamut and ordered three different tacos and a Mexican Coke.

Three tacos

My tacos left to right ~ Nopal, Al Pastor, and Grilled Pescado.

Adobada Taco

Tender pork, nice sweetness to the overall flavor of the taco.

Grilled Fish tacos

Good version of a fish taco. On all the tacos the freshness of the tortillas was noticeable and made a big impact.

Cactus taco

This was my favorite the cactus was cooked perfectly.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive fresh lunch in Encinitas I would hit them up. I would put them way above any place ending in “ertos” or any of the standard Mexican places. I would even put them slightly above Grubbie’s and Taco Taco. I think all three tacos and my Mexican coke came to $12 and change with tax.
