7 Great Dishes ~ North County

A lot of times, while not doing a review, I experience a dish worth mentioning. These really do not support a full article, so from time to time I will compile them into one. Also if you follow northcountyfood on Instagram (Please do) you will get these one offs and general event things in North County.

red rooster burger (1 of 1)

The Rooster Burger @ The Red Rooster, Oceanside ~ American cheese, Ortega chili, grilled onion, sesame seed bun, and your choice of toppings, in this case 1000 island dressing and a little mustard.

Pretty much an institution in Oceanside, the Red Rooster Bar has been around since, well forever. I remember my Dad bringing home Rooster burgers when I was in Jr. High. It is a juicy, tasty, dive bar burger. Pretends to be nothing more, yet it is.

o'side plate (1 of 1)

Weekly Chef Specials @ Petite Madeline ~ Though because they are specials they change weekly, ordering one of Chef Marc’s off the blackboard is the way to go here. He is a Chef I still can not pin down. He uses Asian influences and then throws an Italian pesto in. This one in particular “The O’side plate” included shrimp, pesto, tomatoes, pesto, and the genius addition of kohlrabi noodles (cabbage family).

avo grilled cheese (1 of 1)

Avocado Grilled Cheese @ Barrel Republic, Oceanside ~ After seeing a video of the Chef making this sandwich I had to try it. Perfectly grilled sourdough, tomato, mozzarella, and tempura fried avocado. The avocado stays fresh and soft inside its light battered crust making the dish a lot lighter than it may sound. So, good.

  • Currently only at the Oceanside location.

Tandoori chicken sammie (1 of 1)

Tandoori Chicken Sandwich @ Flying Pig, Vista ~ Fried chicken, house BBQ sauce, on brioche. Another sandwich that after having seen it on Facebook knew “that is going my face”.  Upon arrival I thought “no way i am eating all that”. Yet, due to another light and flavorful batter and the fact the sandwich is so damn good, I destroyed the whole thing.

  • Currently only at the Vista location on the weekends

pelly-s-halibut-plate

Fresh fish Plate @ Pelly’s Fish Market, Carlsbad ~ Local Halibut, lemon butter, Spanish rice, and a side salad w / blue cheese dressing. Simple perfectly cooked fresh fish, not much more you can ask for.

millers (1 of 1)

Heirloom Caprese Salad and Roast Beef Bites @ The Miller’s Table, Oceanside. Cyclops Farms heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, olive oil, and pesto. You can not go wrong with this flavor combo, especially when using top quality ingredients. Most of their sandwiches can be ordered as bites. The ingredients are served on bruschetta and quite filling making combining them with a salad a perfect summer lunch or light dinner.

yogurt (1 of 1)

16oz Blueberry Italian Ice and Mango Sorbet W/ Fresh Fruit @ Guava Lava Frozen Treats, Oceanside ~ First time trying this place out and I loved it. Cute interior, surgically clean, and a great selection of flavors and toppings. I love that they offer Ices and Sorbets in addition to yogurt. Tons of fresh fruit flavor, I shall return.

Holme Estate Cellars ~ Oceanside

Two weeks ago Holme Estate Cellars opened their first brick and mortar tasting room in down town Oceanside at 216 N Coast Highway. The Holme Winery has vineyards located in Mount Benson, South Australia and they also produce wine out of Paso Robles, Ca.

The winery is run by the husband and wife team of Julia and Craig Holme. They have both worked on vineyards all over the world from South Africa to South America.

Personally I think we are very lucky they chose Oceanside to open their tasting room.

bar (1 of 1)

The tasting room has a nice light, relaxed atmosphere. I have been to too many that are all dark oak and low lighting.

lounge (1 of 1)

Nice lounge area up front next to the roll up window. Perfect for the coming summer.

No use talking about a winery without talking about the wine. I judge wines like cologne, I want balance from start to finish. The worst thing is a fruit forward wine with no finish or a week start followed by a heavy tannic finish. That is not the case with Holme’s wines they are balanced and delightful.

wine 1 (1 of 1)

2011 Shiraz, Library special release. 24 months in French oak.

A great wine. The extended aging softens the tannins associated with shiraz.

wine 2 (1 of 1)

2015 Rose. Rose used to be what your mom kept a box of in the fridge. Now days they are complex and cover a verity of styles from sweet to dry. This one is on the drier side, yet still has plenty of fruit on the palate.

wine 3 (1 of 1)

2013 Cabernet. A great wine for red meat or duck. If you have not delved into bigger reds this is a great starting point due to the balance.

So, there you have it, Holme Estate Cellars. Go check them out. One of the owners will be there and can walk you through their wine selection.

Orange Wine and Autostrata @ The Miller’s Table ~ Oceanside

So, I have been on the hunt for “Orange” wine ever since I saw Mario Batali pour some for Action Bronson and Chef Missy Robins on an episode of Moltissimo (I’ll link the video at the bottom of the post).

Trouble was finding it on a wine list in San Diego turned out to be impossible and ordering it was killed by shipping that doubled the bottle cost.

Staci at the Miller’s Table was kind enough, being the awesome person she is, to bring some in for me.

2014 Doqi Qvevri Mtsvane. This is a wine from the republic of Georgia. The grapes are pressed and then the juice, stalks, skin, and pips are aged in clay Qvevri which are clay vessels that are then buried in the ground. The fermentation process with the skins give the wine its deep amber or orange color.Doqi is the winery, Qvevri refers to the fermentation process, and  Mtsvane is the grape.

The wine itself is very dry and fruit forward. It is like a very aggressive Fume Blanc. It probably would benefit from some decanting. I liked it. Something different, it would pair well with strong cheeses and charcuterie.

I had it with The Miller’s table Autostrada sandwich. This is a great sandwich with Italian meats and cheese, so it held up against the wine.

If you want to try a unique wine you’re not going to find many places go check it out at The Miller’s Table, I only had 1/2 a bottle so there is plenty left:)

Sleeping Tiger Coffees ~ Carlsbad

Just as with the restaurant growth of the last few years, Carlsbad and Oceanside have also seen a rise in premium speciality coffee shops recently.

A new player in the game comes to us in the form of Sleeping Tiger Coffees.

The interior takes on the same pallet as the winery tasting room (Located just to the right of me just out of shot.) The building is big with high ceilings and also has a pretty good-sized outdoor patio.
